„Stefan, coffee?“

In the summer holidays 2023 we went on a family holiday in Ferentillo (Umbria). It was very hot in Italy that summer. At midday, the thermometer climbed up to 42° C in the shade. That is clearly too hot for someone from Bielefeld. From our small holiday home, which was situated on a hill below a collapsed castle, we had a sweeping view over the valley.  We can recommend the accommodation „La Rocche“ with a clear conscience. The landlord Paolo gave us a very warm welcome. He has a pleasant manner, gave us enough space to be on our own and yet we felt integrated. I often woke up early in the morning and enjoyed the view from the terrace. Paolo’s morning question „Stefan, coffee?“ and the espresso that followed were the perfect way to start the day.

A restaurant tip on the outskirts of the village is „Albergo Ristorante il Frantoio Monterivoso“. We ate delicious regional specialities and spent two very enjoyable evenings.

Cascata delle Marmore

10 kilometres from Ferentillo is „Cascata delle Marmore“, which was built by the Romans. It is the largest man-made waterfall. Before visiting, you should enquire when the sluices that activate the waterfall are opened.

The midday temperatures made it easy for me to get up very early in the morning to take photos in more pleasant temperatures. I used eBird to find an observation site at Lago Lungo, 30 kilometres away. I visited Lago Lungo several times and was there at sunrise each time. I was surprised at how inaccessible the observation huts there were. I sometimes sank into the mud up to my calves on the way there, which is why I was only able to reach two of the four to six huts. However, I was able to make some interesting observations here. Among others, I photographed bitterns, night herons, purple herons, cormorants, moorhens, sandpipers, little egrets and cattle egrets.

A special experience was the encounter with a kingfisher. It flew up and down in front of the hut several times and was sure to see that I was there. Nevertheless, it sat down on a reed less than four metres in front of me and looked at me. I hadn’t expected to see bee-eaters. They were hunting insects around Lago Lungo. One of them took advantage of the view from a branch directly behind my hut.
