The Obersee
The Obersee is a local recreation area in the north of Bielefeld. It was created at the end of the 1970s by damming the Johannisbach and Jölle streams and is not suitable for swimming, much to the chagrin of some Bielefeld residents. Nevertheless, the Obersee is a popular excursion destination.
Many walkers are out and about on the paths around the Obersee, especially at the weekend. The large playground in the south-west and the „Seekrug“ attract families and day trippers. At the edge of the upper lake, a railway line runs over a viaduct that is well worth seeing. The originally planned extension around the larger Untersee lake, to which the neighbouring „Johannisbachaue“ nature reserve would have to make way, is controversial.

Birdwatching at the Obersee
Days and times outside the main visiting times are particularly suitable for birdwatching. The morning and evening hours around sunrise or sunset are the most promising.
In February 2021, I was able to observe a swan wedding in the early hours of the morning. Kingfishers are regularly seen. However, the bullfinch was apparently used to people and could be photographed relatively close.
In November 2024, a guest from the Taigra and Tundra paid a visit. A red-throated diver spent over a week resting in Bielefeld. I was lucky enough to get a close-up view of it.
