Havelberg
Situated at the confluence of the Havel and Elbe rivers, the small town was already remarkable in earlier times. A sculpture in front of the cathedral bears witness to the fact that the Prussian Soldier King Frederick William I presented the Amber Room to theRussian Tsar Peter I here . The cathedral itself is also worth seeing, as it has been richly decorated thanks to the Wilsnack miracle blood. From the cathedral, the view over the town island extends far into the countryside. It’s worth taking a walk down the cathedral steps via Weinbergstraße onto the island to the picture-book café next to the town hall. If your appetite is a little bigger, we can recommend the restaurant in the ArtHotel with a beautiful terrace under old lime trees and a view over the Havel.
For nature lovers, the Haus der Flüsse is a must. The so-called Quappenwinkel between the Havel and Elbe can also be explored very well by bike, see the route recommendation below. Not far from Havelberg but no longer part of Prignitz is the small town of Tangermünde on the Elbe. The view from the castle hotel over the Elbe meadows is particularly picturesque in the early hours of the morning.
Interesting observations are possible on the outskirts of Havelberg. If you take the beautiful Weinbergstrasse out of town, you have to turn right towards Havelaue after the goat island. I was able to photograph black storks, white-tailed eagles, ospreys, kestrels and other birds here. I have also seen fox dens. Depending on the time of year, you can reach the Stremel, a branch of the Havel, where black terns and other water birds breed. A beautiful birdwatching hut has been built on the opposite side of the Havel, which can be reached via Rathenower Strasse (L2) in the direction of Jederitz. Although it is too far away from the Havel for photographers, interesting sightings are still likely.

I was able to photograph the pair of beavers from the bridge to Flushing Island. They were quite trusting and didn’t let me disturb them. A sea eagle likes to sit in the same place on the other side of the Havel. An eagle owl once nested in the imposing front of Havelberg Cathedral. I haven’t seen it in recent years, but I have seen a large colony of jackdaws, kestrels and other building breeders.

Lake Gülper See lies on the western edge of Brandenburg. It was formed during the Ice Age by glacial meltwater. It was transferred to the NABU National Natural Heritage Foundation in 2009. Due to the low level of light pollution, the nature park is considered one of the darkest places in Germany. This makes the area very interesting for starry sky photographers.
For nature photographers, the area around Lake Gülper See is an exciting and rewarding environment. I have discovered new details and species with every visit. In the north of the lake I was able to photograph red-backed shrikes, cuckoos and white-tailed eagles. To the south is an observation tower, in front of which ospreys and white-tailed eagles often cavort. To the east, you can also spot a variety of red-backed shrikes, orioles, hoopoes and more. It is particularly lively here in the early hours of the morning.

Between Jederitz and Kuhlhausen
Further along the L2 out of town, between Jederitz and Kuhlhausen, you will find an osprey nest on the right-hand side, not far from the road. Here I was able to take photos of ospreys, grey buntings, cranes and cuckoos flying over.
Bölsdorfer Haken
The Bölsdorfer Haken is a nature reserve around an Elbe spur near Tangermünde that is well worth a visit. Nabu has erected a large observation tower here, from which you have a wide view over the Elbe and wet meadows. The area is not directly accessible by car, but you can appreciate the landscape much better by bike or on foot. I visited the area twice very early in the morning in autumn 2023 and was rewarded with an atmospheric morning mist.
